Meet the Doctors

Dr. Steve Looysen grew up in Carrington and graduated from High School there.  He completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Premedicine with honors at North Dakota State University and was a Distinguished Military Graduate in the ROTC program.  Dr. Looysen then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Visual Science and a Doctor of Optometry Degree with honors from Southern California College of Optometry.  After graduating, he was commissioned into the US Army and promoted to the rank of Captain.  During his first two years of service, he was Chief of Optometric Services for the First Infantry Division and the last two years he served as Chief of Optometric Services at Irwin Army Medical Hospital, Ft. Riley, Kansas.  Upon leaving the Army, he returned home to Jamestown where he has established and owned a private practice there ever since.  Dr. Looysen is a certified therapeutic optometrist and enjoys treating all kinds of ocular disease including Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration.  He completed internship rotations in ocular disease, glaucoma, neurology, pediatrics, specialty contact lens, general optometry and retinal disease.  He served as the Army’s Shooting Team Eye Doctor and has extensive experience in shooting sports.  Dr. Looysen has served in various positions in the North Dakota Optometric Association and as a Liaison for the Doctors in the state to Vision Service Plan.  He also currently serves on the Blue Cross Blue Shield Optometric Advisory Committee.  He is a lifelong active member of the North Dakota and American Optometric Associations.  In his spare time, he enjoys singing in a men’s singing group, raising money for the Shrine Hospitals by hosting a Pumpkin Patch, boating, horseback riding and vacationing with his family.  Dr. Steve is the proud father of two sons who are both eye doctors as well.  He is blessed to practice with Dr. Alex. Dr. Tyler is a Vitreoretinal Specialist practicing in the Fargo area.  Barbara, his wife, is a practicing Veterinarian who owns and operates Country Acres Veterinary Clinic. He praises God daily for his many blessings.

Dr. Alex is a Jamestown native who joined his father in practice in June of 2019. It had been his dream from a young age to become an Optometrist, after watching Dr. Steve Looysen, his father, provide high quality eyecare and build lasting patient relationships.  Dr. Alex strives to give his patients the best possible vision and eyecare while building patient relationships in a welcoming environment.

Dr. Alex earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Jamestown before moving to Glendale AZ to attend Arizona College of Optometry where he earned his doctorate in 2019.  He is an active member of the North Dakota Optometric Association and American Optometric Association.

Dr. Alex is especially interested in the care of eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration and Dry Eye Disease.  He is skilled in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of these and all eye conditions.  Dr. Alex also enjoys providing high quality eyecare to children of all ages!  He is a part of the InfantSee program and will perform a FREE vision screening for any child before their first birthday.

Outside of the office Alex enjoys spending time with his wife, Alyssa, his dog Nash, friends and family.  During his free time he enjoys skiing, spending time at the lake, horseback riding and watching Bison football!  He served in the North Dakota House of Representatives during the 2011 and 2013 sessions.  He worked to ensure North Dakota had a bright future while serving on the Health and Human Services, Education, Political Subdivision and Agriculture committees.
